Ka hinga te tōtara haemata i te wao nui a Tāne.
Kua tangihia, kua mihia, kua poroporoākitia.
Haere atu rā e te rangatira, haere ki te kāpunipunitanga o ngā wairua.
It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Senior Firefighter Carl Whiten, who has left us after a courageous battle with cancer. Carl was a dedicated firefighter of the Christchurch Brigade, whose unwavering commitment and service profoundly impacted the lives of countless people across Ōtautahi and beyond.
Carl was not only a respected and dedicated firefighter; he was also the son of long-serving retired Senior Station Officer Ralph Whiten. His passing is felt deeply across generations of firefighters and their whānau.
Carl’s legacy is carried on by his loving wife Beth and their two children, who remain in our thoughts at this incredibly difficult time. The loss of such a dedicated husband, father, and friend leaves a profound mark on our hearts and our service.
Carl exemplified the very best of firefighting—bravery, humility, manaakitanga, and selfless service. He dedicated himself tirelessly to the protection and wellbeing of our communities, embodying the values that define our profession.
On behalf of the NZPFU, and as Carl’s friend, I extend our deepest aroha to Beth, their children, and the entire Whiten whānau.
Moe mai rā e te hoa, kua oti tō mahi rangatira.
Kua hinga te tōtara i te wao nui a Tāne.
A mighty tōtara has fallen in the great forest of Tāne.
Nā,
Joseph Stanley
