A devastated family and community are reeling with the death of the second volunteer firefighter caught in a landslide in Muriwai.

Firefighter Craig Stevens was rescued from the landslide and transported to hospital in a critical condition on Monday but passed away yesterday. QFF Stevens has made the ultimate sacrifice for his dedication and commitment to his community. His service and commitment to the community will not be forgotten.

His family have been in our thoughts as he fought to survive his injuries. We send our aroha and offer any practical support that they may need now and in the future.

This tragedy is being deeply felt through the wider fire and emergency service and the Muriwai community. The Muriwai Fire Brigade is now facing the future without two of their crew, their mates, their extended family. We again offer any practical support that the Brigade may need as they come to terms with the loss of two hugely respected and treasured members.

We also acknowledge the crews and other emergency services who worked hard to rescue QFF Stevens on Monday and the medical professionals who have cared for him.
