The NZPFU has been informed by members that the microphones on mobility tablets have been activated.  The NZPFU has not been provided with any prior warning of the activation of this function or any lawful purpose for doing so.

We have written to the National Commander concerned that the activation of this function is a serious breach of privacy rights and unlawful surveillance.  We have asked who authorised the enabling of the function, and the purpose it is to be used for.

In the interim members have the right to protect their privacy and prevent unlawful surveillance.

The NZPFU understands that the microphone function can be disabled on the tablet and we advise all crews to check that it has been turned off.

In unity,
Wattie Watson
National Secretary
