The Auckland Regional Manager Brian Butt has unilaterally decided to appoint the fence-jumper Glen Menzies to the position of Acting Assistant Area Manager, Auckland City Fire Area.

The Auckland Local has a number of concerns regarding this appointment.

  1. The appointee only holds SFF rank and has no senior command experience.
  2. He has not even ridden in charge of a fire appliance since the review and now Regional Manager Butt wants to put him in charge of a Fire Area.
  3. The health and safety implications of this appointment are beyond belief.
  4. The relocation of Glen Menzies from his role of Chief Fire Safety Officer to that of Acting Assistant Area Manager clearly shows the commitment the Fire Service has to Fire Safety. They consider Fire Safety to be not worthy of having a Senior Officer in this capacity during this period of time, as no members will be relieving up to take Menzies’ place in Fire Safety, yet the Fire Service are prepared to leave it vacant. This is more evidence that they have no commitment to our members who work in the field of Fire Safety or Fire Risk Management.

Members are advised not to follow any orders given by this individual on the incident ground, as to do so could be in breach of the Health & Safety in Employment Act.
